Open Letter to Boko Haram

TO: BORNO STATE, NIGERIA INSURGENTS KNOWN COLLECTIVELY AS "BOKO HARAM"
FROM: EDITOR, WEST AFRICA POST
SUBJ: RELEASE OF ABDUCTED SCHOOLGIRLS

Greetings,
It has been well over a month since your organization raided Chibok town and kidnapped over 200 schoolgirls as they were gathered to take exams. The incident has created not just a heartbreaking situation for their parents but has brought international condemnation from around the world. It has brought a number of communities spanning cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds together in a common cause, to #BringBackOurGirls.

The results are sanctions that will only bring about the inevitable demise of your group. These sanctions range not just from individual nations but from the United Nations, the European Union and a host of others. Your lines of communication will eventually dry up, your weapons contacts will list you as a pariah, the villagers in Borno are already standing up in vigilante groups and fighting back.

Your demand for release of prisoners has been met with a negative response, the Nigerian military has announced it knows  the location of the kidnapped girls. In the sky above are aircraft you have never seen before, deadly American drones with orders to shoot to kill; United Kingdom AWACS planes that can track down every signal you send on mobile and satellite gear. Cameroon and Chad have sealed off their borders with beefed up patrols. On top of all of this, the president of Nigeria has declared war on Boko Haram.

Appealing to your sense of dignity and civility is not what this is all about; appealing to your instinct for survival is what it is all about. You will not be able to carry on in the future with your criminal activity. It has been shown in other West African nations that outlaw Islamist organizations do have a voice in the future of that nation's government. There is no reason to believe that cannot hold true for Boko Haram. That choice is up to you.

Release the abducted schoolgirls, send them back to their families. Then negotiate with the government for the sake of your own survival; which may include a cease fire and accountability for actions. That cannot be done with the current status quo. There may or may not be a place for Boko Haram in the future of Nigeria, that is entirely up to you.
