Former Nigeria player Friday Ekpo has thumbed
up coach Stephen Keshi for picking Enugu Rangers forward, Ejike Uzoenyi as a
replacement for injured left-back Elderson Echiejile in his team for the 2014
Brazil World Cup.
Echiejile’s injury against Greece
ruled him out of his second appearance at the quadrennial global football
showpiece after scan revealed he had a muscle tear and would be ruled out for
up to three weeks.
According to the former Super Eagles
and Abiola Babes midfielder Keshi had no choice but to recall Uzoenyi who was
the best player at the 2014 African Nations Championship in South Africa.
“If Keshi had another defender, he
would have changed a defender for a defender. But now he has no option but to
bring in Uzoenyi to fill the gap,” Ekpo told Punch.
“He is a natural left-footer and he
can add depth to the team.
Ekpo however feels not too assured
of the Eagles backline describing it as shaky and unstable.
“I am not too confident in our
defenders. The defence is unstable; it’s shaky and the time is short for them
to work on it,” he continued.
“Maybe a player like Omeruo will be
able to adjust but I am not too comfortable with the left-back position and the
entire defence because each time attackers go past our defenders, it’s like hot
knife through butter,” he concluded.
