Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese
woman sentenced to death for abandoning her Islamic faith, has been freed from
jail.
Her lawyer has informed BBC.
Ibrahim’s death penalty was overturned by an appeal court.
If you recall Meriam who married a Christian man
was sentenced under Sharia law to hang for apostasy in May after she refused to
renounce her Christianity. Pregnant at the time, she later gave birth to girl
in prison.
Daniel Wani, her husband told reporters that he is looking
forward to seeing her, and that he wants his family to leave Susan as soon as
possible.
“We are very very happy about this – and we’re
going to her now, they have released her… she’s on her way to home. It’s a
victory for freedom of religion in Sudan… By Mariam’s strong position, we
believe that in the future no-one will be subjected to such a trial,” said her
lawyer Elshareef.
