One of the men was 23-year-old Michael
Todd Wolfe of Austin, Texas. He was arrested on Tuesday at
George H.W. Bush Houston Intercontinental Airport just before he boarded a
flight to Europe, CNN reports.
Wolfe has been charged with “attempting to
provide material support to terrorists.” He reportedly planned to travel to the
Middle East to render his services to radical groups involved in
armed conflict in Syria.
The second man, Rahatul Ashikim Khan, also
23, is from Round Rock, Texas. He was arrested in a separate case at his
home and charged with “conspiring to provide material support to terrorists.”
“This case is the culmination of a long-term
investigation by the FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force made up of local,
state and federal law enforcement agencies in Central Texas. It’s a textbook
example of how well law enforcement agencies in this area work together,” U.S.
Attorney Robert Pitman said in a statement.
The two men are now in federal custody and a
detention hearing is set for Friday. If convicted, they face up to 15
years in federal prison and a maximum fine of $250,000.
