As Germans
geared up for their World Cup title and the country was distracted by the
football fever, a gang of thieves systematically emptied a warehouse, carting
away 10 truckloads of beer.
The German police said on Wednesday,
July 16th that they were hunting for the thieves while also calling on anyone
who has useful information to come forward.
The police in the state of North
Rhine-Westphalia while appealing for the public’s help said: "Has
anyone noticed a very large amount of beer? Does anyone have information about
where it could be stored?"
The police believes the truckloads
of beer were stolen from a warehouse some time between last Thursday evening
and Monday morning, a day after the German football team beat Argentina
in the World Cup final.
The theft was noticed on Monday with
police confirming the thieves carried away some 300,000 litres (80,000 gallons)
of canned beer.
Speaking to AFP, a police
spokesperson from the western city of Krefeld, where the pallets of beer were
stolen said: "We’re following up on two or three leads."
She added that there was no
indication the beer had ended up in the hands of the vast
and jubilant crowds who welcomed the national team home on Tuesday.
